Order Discounts
Order discounts apply to your customer’s entire order subtotal, reducing the total amount they pay. Unlike product discounts that apply to specific items, order discounts provide a blanket discount across the entire purchase.
How Order Discounts Work
Order discounts are calculated after product discounts and apply to the order subtotal. When multiple order discounts are configured, you can control which one gets applied using discount application strategies.
Setting Up an Order Discount
Basic Settings
Discount Type
- Fixed Amount: Reduces the order by a specific dollar amount (e.g., $10 off)
- Percentage: Reduces the order by a percentage of the subtotal (e.g., 15% off)
Discount Message The message customers see in their cart and at checkout when the discount is applied. Make it clear and descriptive (e.g., “Holiday Special - 20% Off Your Order”).
Discount Value The amount or percentage to discount. Enter the number without currency symbols or percentage signs - the system will format it automatically.
Application Strategy
When you have multiple order discount conditions that could apply to the same order, the application strategy determines which discount gets used:
First Applies the first order discount that meets its conditions. Use this when you want predictable discount application in a specific order.
Maximum Applies whichever order discount provides the largest savings to the customer. This is customer-friendly as it ensures they always get the best deal available.
Excluded Cart Line Groups
You can exclude specific product groups from the order discount calculation. For example, if you want to exclude gift cards or already-discounted items from your order discount, select those groups here.
To use this feature, you’ll need to first create a “Define Cart Line Groups” action earlier in your function flow to define which products belong to each group.
Best Practices
Discount Messages
- Be specific about what the discount applies to
- Use clear, customer-friendly language
- Consider mentioning the discount amount or savings
Strategy Selection
- Use “Maximum” if you want to always give customers the best available deal
- Use “First” if you need precise control over which discounts apply in what order
Testing
Always test your order discounts with sample carts to ensure they work as expected and provide the customer experience you want.
Common Use Cases
- Free shipping threshold: “$5 off orders over $50 (covers shipping cost)”
- Loyalty rewards: “VIP customers get 15% off their entire order”
- Seasonal promotions: “Holiday Special - $25 off orders over $150”
- First-time buyer incentive: “Welcome! 10% off your first order”
- Bulk purchase encouragement: Fixed or percentage discounts for larger orders
Important Notes
- Order discounts apply to the order subtotal, after any product discounts
- Only one order discount can be applied per order (based on your strategy setting)
- Order discounts don’t apply to shipping, taxes, or other fees
